For the younger players

The Stringtail Possums is a fiddling group for violin or cello players aged approximately 8 - 12 years and who have been playing for about 2 years (or reached the end of Grade 1 AMEB/Suzuki Book 1).
No fiddling experience is necessary, just a desire to try something new and have fun making music!

The tunes are taught by ear and music given to take home. We play many Scottish tunes, but also some other styles of fiddling tunes. (Click on the tunes below for music). This is great aural training for young players, especially if they are not used to playing by ear.

Fiddle playing DOES NOT INTERFERE with classical training - in Scotland it was and still is common to play both styles! Scottish playing in particular allows great bowing development and also the opportunity to improvise and harmonise, key learning outcomes in music education! This is a great addition to playing classical music and a number of Celtic pieces are currently included in exam syllabuses.

Dates for 2015

This group is not currently active, but if you are interested please email (see contact page) and it can be restarted if there is sufficient interest.
The group is taken by Margaret Schlink, a trained violin/viola teacher and an Accredited Member of the WA Music Teachers Association, with years of experience both in private and school based teaching.

The Possums meet on the last Sunday of the month (the same day and venue as the Perth Scottish Fiddlers) from 2 - 3pm. Cost is $8.00 per session.

(And in case you're wondering, our logo is a Western Ringtail Possum!)
